Mixed Bag
The weekend was a real mixed bag.
It was great seeing DH again, after five weeks (!) apart. It was a great reminder of why we got married. I've been on my own with little boy (and parental help - can't forget the parental help!) for a while, and I was starting to feel like I'm alone. Being together for a few days was a tangible reminder of how much I like being married to DH. He's fun and funny and very good company. I enjoy being together.
We're going to hook up somewhere - either at home, if the house is available or halfway between his city and mine - over Thanksgiving. That's just three weeks from tomorrow! After that, it's just three and a half weeks until we're living back home. So this is going to be pretty smooth sailing from here on.
Also, in other interesting news, DH was offered a new contract for the academic year from January - August. His employer terminated 40% of the faculty, and another 20% may be rehired pending enrollment. DH is in the 40% that was specifically retained. This is, of course, very good news from a financial standpoint. I have mixed feelings about going back to Louisiana, because it's been so rotten for me professionally. But the ongoing income will be a Very Good Thing.
DH's employer was not obligated to consider tenure or seniority in its hiring decisions, because of the emergency nature of the termination (all contracts were declared void). This is a little disturbing, because tenure is fairly sacrosanct. Several tenured faculty were apparently not retained. Also, several faculty were not retained who have seniority over DH (although they are also not tenured).
And on the down side, Little Boy was very sick. He spent most of Sunday night throwing up. He's still running a fever (three days later) and if he isn't better by tomorrow, I'm going to take him to an MD. I'm home from work with him (hence the blogging). I hope he gets better soon.
More good news - Older Son's mid-term grades were excellent. Now if he'd just GET A JOB.

That is good news, although I agree that dropping tenured folks over non tenure doesn't sound right. I guess there is legal precidence to do that?
Hope your boy gets better soon, no fun being sick or being the parent of a sick child.
Yup, hubby's gone, posts start again.
Pretty low, not honoring tenure. I thought that was pretty secure - I know sometimes the tenured people can get pretty lazy, and it would be nice to can a few. How much longer till DH gets there?
Whew! I was afraid to ask whether your DH was among the unlucky at his place of employment. There are mass layoffs all over the city, but establishments in our neck of the woods are practically begging people to take jobs.
Glad to get an update on your family. Hope those next few weeks go by quickly.
how is little boy ? did he miss halloween because of sickness ?
glad to hear you will all be going home. maybe the job climate has changed so you can find something good. we can hope.
