Yard Work in Louisiana
Doing yard work here is an absolute chore. We've had a lot of rain, so the grass is growing like crazy. And it's hotter than blazes, and the humidity is unbelievable. It doesn't help that I'm not in shape. Well, round is a shape, but not the shape most conducive to vigorous activity in the heat.
Fortunately, the front yard is pretty small, and there's a pretty good-sized patch without much grass. So I was able to get it cut this morning in about 30 minutes. I even trimmed the tall grass next to the border edging (railroad ties, in termite country...not my idea, OK?) It took almost no time, even with these little hand clippers.
The back yard...well, Little Boy won't get lost out there, so it's going to wait for another day. Or evening, close to sunset.

The first paragraph could have very easily been on my blog, except my yard is bigger and it takes us close to two hours to mow it all. Did I mention I live on a corner as well? My neighbor thinks I have double the amount of lawn to mow that he does.
I finally gave up and bought a machete to take care of my bushes. Even the powered trimmer wouldn't cut it. We've had so much rain here in Michigan the weeds, bushes, what not remind me more of Panama.
Mike aka Capt Jack anonymous for now.
Mike, nice to see you! I trimmed the azaleas and the holly bushes (some sort of holly, with ugly black berries) about a month ago or so. The whole front yard changed...so much tidier. The power trimmer did just fine, though I needed to use a small saw for some of the larger branches. I also sawed some dead limbs off of the small oak trees. What a difference just a little work made.
I would like to dig up the space between the trees and plant some perennials. I have a lovely flower between the azaleas that has tiny blue flowers in the daytime, that are closed in the a.m. I'm wondering if I can propogate them. This is the sort of activity best reserved for February, here...it's just so miserable outside in the summer.
Well, my Louisiana lawn actually looks okay for once. At least we won't get any letter bombs from the homeowner's association anytime soon. I went out last weekend and obliterated a couple of fire ant mounds and cut both the front and back lawns. The back hadn't been cut since, oh, April or so, and it looked really bad. However, we never got around to watering it, so there wasn't a whole lot of tall grass. Or any grass, for that matter. And a big chunk of the back was under the tarp that goes under the kids' pool, so it's pretty dead there too. The grass in front was thick and green, but we've noticed a few dead spots out there. The neighbors are starting to have that too, so I need to ask them what's up. They actually care about that kind of stuff.
