Zoo
I had a good day yesterday.
In the morning I went to water aerobics; the exercise of choice for obese, poor-condition women over 40. It was my first time. It was fun. I worked pretty hard for almost an hour; I got nice and winded. I was surprised at how my legs felt when I got out of the water - they felt like I had weights attached. It took a few minutes for them to normalize.
I can't really go to the weekday morning classes, because they start too late. But they have two evening sessions I could go to. Exercising three days a week is certainly better than I've been doing the last two years, which is not at all, not even a little bit.
In the afternoon, DH, little boy and I went to the zoo. That was also a good time. The weather was really nice for southeast Louisiana in May; temps in the 80's, but with relatively low humidity. We enjoyed looking at the animals. Little boy rode the carousel. He especially liked the big cats. No pictures, unfortunately; the camera batteries died.
Afterwards, we went out to dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant in the city - reasonable prices and good food. They re-opened back in January, but we haven't been there since way before the hurricane. I had a chicken taco salad; it grows as you eat it.
I loved driving up Magazine St. and seeing all the shoppers and the little creole cottages; some of them are businesses, others are residences. If we are still here in ten years when little boy is done with school, we would both like to move there. I love the activity and pedestrian quality of residential urban life. Plus, there wouldn't be any yardwork. It would cost more, but we could downsize. And it's on the sliver by the river, so flooding isn't so much of a concern.

One of the nice benifits of living in a city, all the activities one can get involved with and usually all nearby. I was looking at some of the activities in Corvallis, home of OSU (the real one ;-) and where i got my degree and drooled over all the things one can do, it is just to far to drive to on a regular basis :-(
The sliver by the river?
I've always liked city life, being able to walk to things.
Nanna, a friend and I are thinking of coming to NO about Sept 8 - 11. Would you like to get together? I don't know if I have your email any more. COuld you email me at hopie thirty three at Yahoo dot com?
hey, is that the great restaurant you took joe and us too ? it sits on a corner not too far from the cemetary. i remember your bottomless salad. their salsa had a bit of a bite to it. would love to return sometime.
bet little boy did love the zoo. do they still have the beautifull white tiger. is that what little boy loves? do they still have elephant rides ?
wish we were there with you.
any word on the aquarium ?
congratulations on your new mayor (not)
its just me !
oops - i meant - its just the lower case me -
I started Pilates during my cruise, and I think it will do wonders for my lower back. Now I just have to drop 50 pounds so I can do some of the forward bending exercises.
anon--the Aquarium is supposed to be reopening next week. That and the zoo are two of the few truly outstanding things about N.O.
When I grow up I want to move to something like Magazine St., only not in the hot humid South, but maybe Northeast.
Or West.
(sigh) I'll never get out of here.
"The Sliver by the River" refers to the crescent of the Crescent City; the old parts of town along the Mississippi which are, ironically, the high ground.
Yes, mommy, that's where we went for lunch. When are you and Old Fart coming back? We need to meet in Hattiesburg for lunch or something on a Saturday...soon!
Hopie, e-mail on the way.
Phoebe, I know EXACTLY how you feel.
dont know when we can get down there - there are too many detours in our lifes road right now but you never know when opportunity knocks.
great to hear about the aquarium. i saw in the jackson paper that several other aquariums had given them fish. it is scary that they will open just in time for the new hurricane season.
whoever would do exercises on a cruise ? it is for a vacation - we did check out the exercise room on our cruise and watched all the other people work out !!!!
great - they opened the aquarium yesterday. the penquins looked so happy to be home.
wonder if they fixed the imax theater ?
hope they made it a little more hurricane proof this time. if there is such a thing.
