June 1

In one week and one day it will be June 1. I get tense and anxious thinking about it. I am not ready for June 1. My community is not ready for June 1.

Repairs to the 17th Street Canal are not complete. The design is flawed, so even if the repairs were complete, it still wouldn't be "fixed."

100,000 people are still living in trailers. Trailers will not withstand winds higher than 50 mph. That's a tropical storm. Tropical storms are common down here.

I try not to "buy trouble." The weather is just one of those things nobody can do anything about. All I can do is be prepared. We bought water last week. We will take inventory of our non-perishables and make our two-scenario plan (evacuate or stay). We're in better shape than many (most) of the people who live here.

And I'll try not to think about it.

I didn't know you were in New Orleans, Ann, or I did, I forgot, which happens ever more frequently.

You and your city will surely be in our prayers. Our hearts go out.

AS well as all of the government agencies are acting (reacting) I hope that you have shipped everything up north to be stored above the water line for the next seven years, and keep the 'emergency get out of town' stuff in your trunk.
Good luck.

with all the bridges still out on the miss. coast - it will be even harder for them to evacuate. son in florida says he is not coming this way to evacuate ever again. i 20, i 55 and hwy 49 were giant parking lots.
looks like in the paper that nagin is trying to put together some type of plan to get people out on public transportation. maybe he did learn something from his mistakes.
have you done all the repairs to your home ?
how is little boy handling all this ?

I'm not a tough lady, TrailSeeker. I'm a basket case.

We talked hurricane prep last night.

Historically, the western gulf gets its big hurricanes later on in the season--from August to October--while the east coast takes the earlier hits. That's not an absolute rule, but it might mean June 1 isn't as big a deal as people are making out of it.

Besides, you and I live above sea level! I'm more concerned about the people in East N.O. and St. Bernard Parish than about the folks who live around the 17th Street Canal.
