Disintegrating bathroom

We've had some problems by the tub in our bathroom. The grout was cracking in a number of places, and we had some accidents (DH pulled off the soap dish, drywall and all, and put his foot through some tiles next to the faucet).

We had decided to retile. We thought we would probably have some mold to deal with, and expected to need to replace some sheetrock. What we did not expect was to find a totally rotted out 2x4, part of a cluster that acts as a support beam.

I'm not sure what to do about this. Also, the process of ripping out the tile has me thinking about just completely redoing the bathroom. I hate our bathroom. Some idiot thought it would be good to put a vanity sink in the bedroom, and the bathroom is just the toilet and tub. The configuration is really dumb, and we could make a much more spacious room (and get more closet space, to boot) by pulling out the vanity, reconfiguring some interior walls, and putting a nice pedestal sink in the bathroom.

I'm going to call the insurance company to see if any of the repairs to the wall are covered by our homeowner's insurance. We probably can't afford any of this, but at least if the wall can be fixed, we ought to do it. It seems silly to spend any money at all putting tile up when we could just bite the bullet and get the room done the way we want. DH is a very handy guy, and none of this is beyond the scope of his abilities - except for the wall.

Walls are easier than the plumbing. Just pay attention to the supporting walls and beams.
I say go for it - instead of returning to what you had make it into what you want. The only additional cost would be for the additional lumber and drywall, and the extra time to do it. We've always found it is worthwhile to change things over toward what you would rather have.

Very, very stupid. I don't know what Moron thought it would be good to put the vanity in the bedroom.

We talked to a contractor, and it will be WAY too much money to do the whole thing. However, if we keep the re-org simple, we should be able to do some of it ourselves, over time, after I start earning money again.

The new house we bought in southern California about thirty years ago had the bedroom vanity. All of the models in that subdivision were like that. I guess it was one of those 70's things - along with the sunken living rooms and harvest gold kitchens (replacing the avocado green ones). Oh - and having bathroom fixtures in some shade other than white. Our neighbor here had one bath with everything pink, another green. They built the house in 77 and have no one to blame but themselves. They recently had them reporcelined (?? is that a word??) into white.
On the contractor thing - do it your selves. probably 70% of the cost there is labor. See if you can find a friend that is a plumber or electrician to help, or just sub out those jobs you can't do directly.
We moved around a bathroom here, and installed a new stall shower for my mother, and it was all under $500. The most expensive thing was the shower faucet. Home Depot has some marvelous fiberglass stalls, and building a counter and tiling it yourself isn't too hard.

Hi Ann...

Sounds like some serious work and expense you've got ahead of you with that bathroom. Good luck with everything. I'd offer counsel but I'm (sniff) not one of the mechanically or tools inclined people that I admire so much.

Hi Ann. What a co-ink-a-dink. We just gutted out bathroom ("we" means the remodelers), and I know you will just have to go ahead and do it. I know what a rotted bathroom wall looks like.

Yeah, we're going to have the wall fixed and put in a marble(?) tub surround. We're just going to have to do it piece by piece, as we simply can't afford to have it done, and we just don't have the time right now to do it ourselves. Maybe we can do the update next summer.
