More about local campaigns, and running away from home
In an earlier post, I wrote about a phone conversation with a worker for a local candidate for City Court Judge. Saturday, I got a brochure from another candidate. It was very different from the other brochures I've read. She actually talks about her work experience that qualifies her for the position - seven years as public defender for the exact same court.
What a concept. Instead of talking about how she's pro-life (how will that affect a court that is 80% juvenile criminal cases?) and pro-marriage (ditto) she talks about her experience and strong, positive working relationships with the people on the staff. Here's a quote: "I am the only candidate that can win the election on Saturday and report to work on Monday without missing a beat."
Maybe I'll call her campaign office and see if they want me to put up a yard sign.
In other news, we are almost all packed up and ready to run away from Hurricane Ivan it's a category five, heading into the channel between Cuba and the Yucatan peninsula. The prophets at the NHC can't really say where it's headed beyond the next 24 hours or less. We've booked a room in Meridian, far enough inland that we won't be bothered by hurricane-force winds or storm surge. We probably won't leave until Wednesday a.m., if we go at all. It just depends on what the Hurricane does later today and tomorrow.
I was pretty frightened this morning. DH and I have both told Little Boy that he doesn't need to be afraid, and so he's not. Oh, to be five again! But then I e-mailed my pal R., a long-time resident, and he told me that they're getting ready to go, too. That had a very calming effect on me. Thanks, bud. You rock.

Oy. How close to the coast do you live? I really hope you can just stay put.
We live about 10 miles as the crow files from the Gulf of Mexico. With a big, fat lake to the west.
Truly, if it comes this way at Category 3 or higher, we'd be totally stupid to stay. As R. said, "The problem in our parish is pine trees. You can board up all the windows you want, but that isn't going to help when a pine tree lands on your roof."
Latest news has it heading for the Republican in Pensacola, instead of the Republicans here. Better them than me...
Thanks for the nice words, Ann.
We're a few miles north of Lake Pontchartrain, and you can angle out of that lake through Lake Borgne directly into the Gulf. Ann lives just south of I-12, which is the traditional evacuation line. I live just north of I-12, so I'm unlikely to be a mandatory evacuee. Whatever -- we've got hotel reservations in northern Mississippi.
Run, Nanna, Run! And remember, it's not THAT the wind is blowing, it's WHAT the wind is blowing...
You can stay with me if you want. I will even clean my house and possibly cook a dinner or two.
Take care of yourself

A trip to NM is a real possibility next summer, Lori. We may go collect lizards. Well, DH and little boy will collect lizards. I will stay with you :)
You're in Luck! We have lots of lizards here. But they are quick, I think its an evolutionary thing having to do with the hot asphalt...
I have a bloodhound that will just LOVE your younger son. Please visit if you can.
Now get off the computer and move inland. Don't make me get out my back issues of Esp. for Mormons and find some really scary stories about those who didn't heed the "warnings"! Your son will consider this a vacation as long as your hotel has a pool.

So, are you still there, or what? This is a little suspenseful because the talking heads on the local news only talk about Florida as if it were the only land mass besides Cuba in the path of the hurricane.
Interestingly, all of the computer models have Ivan passing very close to us, while the Nat'l Hurricane Center is sticking to its guns on the Florida Panhandle.
I'm not going anywhere yet. I don't have any plans to go anywhere until the wee hours on Wednesday. I have no idea what we'll do if we have to leave tomorrow...we don't have anywhere to stay.
Free advice -- head north on I-55 until you can't go anymore. Memphis might still have some rooms; I don't know. I would say go west on I-10, but Baton Rouge traffic during a hurricane is like Dante's Inferno.
