Hours lost
I don't do much. I'm pretty involved (ok, too involved) in a couple of online communities that suck up enormous amounts of time. I don't read the net at work because...well, because I need this job, and I want to show my commitment by actually being committed.
My therapist would say (has said) that my online communities are substitutes for real communities and real relationships and I need to find real things to do with my time, like finding a community choir or theatre group, or Tai Chi, or Feng Shui (waves to Lori). I have a host of real things to do with my time, like read to the little boy, or help him with homework, or VACUUM.
Do I set the timer? Do other stuff first? I don't think I have it in me to quit cold turkey.

I hate it when therapists say that. Maybe there is this therapist forum where they exchange funny anecdotes about patients and tell sex jokes. I'll bet that's what they do after work, you think?
Um, OK. Do things first, then award yourself with 15 minutes of online time. Then stick a gold star to your forehead. Gold stars work every time. :)
Or you could play puerile practical jokes on the other participants in those fora, then realize how nutty you look and be embarrased about going back. I'm just saying.
On one hand, I give a lot of time to the internet. On the other hand, without the internet, I wouldn't have gone back to school or be able to indulge my myriad interests.
So-called real life interaction is often overrated. Just sayin'. Otherwise, I think Phoebes has the right idea.
I disagree with your therapist (because I'm That Way) but I don't feel that your online fellowship* are any less real in regards to relationships or community. With your job, little boy, bigger boy, grand-daughter, daughter & SIL, and who am I forgetting? oh yeah, your HUSBAND! You have plenty of real things to do with real people and your time.
I don't know about you, but I don't have a lot of time to spend with my real life friends in the community, and what little time I do manage to find, I'd rather spend with my family.
*(excuse the mormon-speak)
Oops.
That was me, I'm having a stupid day...

I set the timer the other way. I make myself do housework for ten minutes, then it's back to reading BBs or playing computer Scrabble - my true addiction!
Besides I am going to make the leap from internet life into your real life and you won't be able to stop me! I need a vacation, I've never been to your part of the country, and my daughter wants a trip down there to at least glance at her biological father.
I also have a goal to meet at least two internet friens in real life this year! Maybe we're only internet acquaintances right now, but I plan on worming my way in! Mwahahahaha!
Hope
Hope, are you Hopie from Fringe? When are you coming?
It won't be until after the middle of June - I don't know for sure yet. Em graduates on June 11. I may not know until much closer to the trip.
Yes, Hopie from the Fringe. I'd like to go through GA and see Erin and Julia on the way, then head down.
Hope, PM me your e-mail addie over on aimoo. I'd love to see you!
